Fig Garden Real Estate

Old Fig Garden is considered one of Fresno’s most charming neighborhoods. Expect to find beautiful historic homes, tree-lined streets, upscale shopping and dining and time-honored community traditions like Christmas Tree Lane. The neighborhood was developed in the early 1900’s based on the vision of J.C. Forkner. Forkner convinced residents to grow figs for profit on their 10 and 40 acre parcels. Over time it has evolved to become one of the most prestigious and desirable communities in the Fresno area, offering a fine range of beautiful historic homes, including adobe, period revival, bungalow and ranch style designs. Many include sitting rooms, libraries, basements and other features that are unique finds today. Within the surrounding blocks of the original Old Fig Garden neighborhood, you’ll find more quaint streets with ranch style houses built in the 1960s and 70s and situated on large lots with big trees. Fig Garden is a unique and beloved neighborhood in the Fresno area.

Location

The original Old Fig Garden neighborhood, formerly called the Forkner-Giffen Fig Garden Estates, consists of a six square mile unincorporated community surrounded on all sides by the city of Fresno. In between Shaw Avenue on the north, Blackstone Avenue on the east, Shields Avenue on the south, and Fruit Avenue on the west, you will find the most concentrated blocks of the historic homes and tree-lined streets that Fig Garden is known for. However over the years, the “Fig Garden” area has grown to include north of Shaw, where you will find the Fig Garden Village shopping center and more charming older homes surrounding Bullard High School.

Schools

Students who live in the Fig Garden neighborhood attend Fresno Unified Schools, California’s fourth largest school district. Most high school students in the neighborhood will attend award-winning Bullard High School and others will attend the beautifully renovated historic Fresno High School. 7th and 8th graders will attend either Tenaya Middle School, Wawona Middle School or Fort Meyer Middle School. K-8th grade students will attend either Kratt Elementary, Gibson Elementary, Powers Ginsburg Elementary or Del Mar Elementary. Area Recommendations

You will find no shortage of things to do in the Fig Garden neighborhood. The highlight of the year is Christmas Tree Lane, an annual tradition since 1920. Festive cheer abounds during this seasonal display on Van Ness Blvd., from Shields to Shaw, which includes millions of Christmas lights hung on 140 homes and 300 trees.

Most lots in this neighborhood are huge, but residents who want to expand their backyards even further can become members at Fig Garden Swim & Racquet Club. Established in 1963, “FIG” is a private, members-owned club that features swimming, tennis courts, a delicious cafe and plenty of social fun.

Fig Garden Village is not only a beautiful upscale shopping and dining destination but also the center of the Fig Garden community. You’re sure to run into friendly neighbors shopping at Whole Foods or sitting out at Starbucks. In addition to popular name brand stores like Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma, J.Crew, Banana Republic, lululemon and Talbot’s, you’ll also find a unique variety of local boutiques like Aporjon Custom Leather & Luggage, Top Drawer and Orloff Jewelers. When it comes to dining, you’d be hard pressed to find another shopping center in town with a higher concentration of quality options. Stop for a quick bite at Uncle Harry’s New York Bagelry or Hungry Bear Cookies. For lunch, we recommend a leisurely stop at locally-owned French bakery La Boulangerie or organic, locally-sourced ingredients at Patio Cafe.  Elbow Room Bar & Grill, another popular Fig Garden favorite, is the perfect location for a Friday night dinner date or Sunday brunch on the patio, featuring live music. And if you’re looking for summer evening fun, don’t miss Fig Gig!
